Lucy Jean Covington Stephenson, 77, of McComb, died Jan. 31, 2007, at her residence following a lengthy illness.
Visitation is 5 to 8 tonight at Jones Family Funeral Services in McComb, and from noon Saturday until services there at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Ron West and Dr. Lee Castello officiating. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery.
Mrs. Stephenson was born Jan. 25, 1930, in Weir to Asa Brown Covington and Susia Beatrice Carr Covington.
She was a member of North McComb Baptist Church. She was a retired teacher.
She graduated from Ackerman High School in 1948 and Mississippi State University in 1955 with a bachelor of science degree in education. She graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1970 with a master’s degree in education and in 1982 received her 30-plus certification.
She taught at Weir High School in 1954, and she and her husband moved to McComb in 1955, where she taught at McComb High School until 1968. She then taught at Southwest Mississippi Junior College until her retirement in 1985.
Her family referred to Mrs. Stephenson as a dedicated, devoted and supportive mother and grandmother and a Christian lady. She was raised in a southern manner and taught her children and grandchildren those same characteristics. She was a strong-willed lady.
She was a sponsor of Future Secretaries of American for many years at Southwest Mississippi Junior College and was instrumental in her three sons and grandson Bill achieving Eagle Scout. She was a strong supporter of Troop 123, Boy Scouts of America. She served on numerous committees, including the homecoming committee at Southwest, and was chosen Teacher of the Year during the 1970s. She also served as church pianist at one time at North McComb Baptist Church.
Mrs. Stephenson was preceded in death by her parents and one son, John W. Stephenson Sr.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Samuel Byron Stephenson of McComb; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim Stephenson Sr. and Cindy of Shreveport, La., and Bob Stephenson and Trish of Picayune; one daughter-in-law, Peggy Etheridge Stephenson of McComb; mother-in-law, Mable Wells Stephenson of Ackerman; two brothers, Karon Carr Covington and James Ferrell Covington, both of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and five grandchildren, John W. “Bill” Stephenson Jr., Austin S. Stephenson, James H. Stephenson Jr., Mason G. Stephenson and Garrett N. Stephenson.
Pallbearers will be John W. “Bill” Stephenson Jr., Sammie Buie, Johnny Graves, Ronnie Wilkinson, Sandy Buie and Billy Jacobs. Honorary pallbearers will be Earl Freeman, Boyd Wells and Dave Kimble.
