Lloyd Theodore Newman Jr.

1935-2008

Lloyd Theodore Newman Jr., 72, a lifelong resident of Amite County, died April 11, 2008, at Baptist Hospital in Jackson. Visitation is 6 to 8 tonight at Jones Family Funeral Services of McComb, then 10 a.m. Monday at East Fork Baptist Church in Amite County until services there at 11 a.m. The Revs. Paul Cain, Maurice Wicker and Clint Miller will officiate, and burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Newman was born May 29, 1935, to Lloyd and Doris Nunnery Newman. His paternal grandparents were James Albert and Lorena Campbell Newman. His maternal grandparents were Mack and Bessie Hughey Nunnery.

He was a retired Illinois Central Railroad engineer with 42 years of service. He was a member of East Fork Baptist Church.

He was proud of his family heritage as a descendant of the Newman, Nunnery, Campbell, Sharp, McGehee and Hughey families of Amite County. He was very interested in genealogy and had a hobby of researching family history.

During his service to ICRR, Mr. Newman acquired many friends and was affectionately known as “Uncle Lloyd.” He was well known for his interested stories.
He graduated from Liberty High School and attended Southwest Mississippi Junior College. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. In his younger years, he served as a leader of the Royal Ambassador boys group and on various committees at East Fork Baptist.

He was a former member of the Liberty Chamber of Commerce and the Lions Club.

Mr. Newman was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Jeanne Newman Seale; and an infant brother, Harold.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Gale Daniels Newman; a daughter, Sheila Lynn Newman of Fairhope, Ala.; a son and daughter-in-law, Lloyd T. Newman III and Cindy Wilson Newman of Liberty; grandchildren, Jenny Newman of Clinton, Daniel Hunter Newman of Mississippi State University in Starkville, and William Lloyd “Billy” Newman of Liberty; two brothers and a sister-in-law, James L. and Camille Newman of Liberty and Robert C. Newman of Baton Rouge; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Hunter Newman, John Newman, James Henry Newman, Joe Newman, Ricky Newman and Bobby Seale.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Robertson, Charlie Sharp, Buck Statham, Tommy McNeil, Robert Brown, Robert Causey, Pee Wee Bowlin, the Rev. Ray Quinley, the Rev. A.J. Ogden and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.
