Rufus S. McEwen, 90, of Ruth and formerly of the Felder’s
Campground community, died April 16, 2008, at Southwest Mississippi
Regional Medical Center in McComb. Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m.
today at Felders United Methodist Church, and at 1 p.m. Saturday
until services there at 3 p.m. The Rev. Fred Gerber and the Rev.
Charles Brister will officiate. Burial will be in Felders Cemetery.
Jones Family Funeral Services in McComb is in charge of
arrangements.
Mr. McEwen was born Dec. 17, 1917, in the Felders Community. He was
the son of the late Chauncey Clinton and Mary Elizabeth Ainsworth
McEwen.
He attended Eaton school for eight years and was a graduate of
Carters Creek High School Class of 1936. He also a graduate of
Southwest Mississippi Jr. College and Mississippi State College, a
World War II veteran, having served in the U. S. Army in England,
Italy and Africa. He was a life-long member of Felders United
Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school for many years and
served as chairman of the administrative board and as a trustee, as
well as on other committees. He was a member of the Felder Camp
Meeting Association and the Felder Cemetery Association, served on
the Pike County School Board and the Pike County Farm Service Agency
and worked with the Soil Conservation Service, and the U.S.
Department of Agriculture. He also served with the Veterans
Administration, teaching agriculture classes for veterans, in 1954
he took over the family business which he and Bridget operated
together.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Catherine Bridget McDaniel
McEwen; two sons, David Clinton “Mac” McEwen and his wife Rebecca
“Becky” McEwen, and John Matthew McEwen; three daughters, Mary
Catherine Twitchell and her husband James “Buddy” Twitchell,
Elizabeth Anne “Libby” and her husband Charlie Sibley, and Carron
Harriet and her husband Raymond King; one sister, Harriet McEwen;
five grandchildren, Steven Chauncey Sibley, Charlie Castle Sibley
II, Timothy Pearl Sibley, Laura Bridget King and her husband Michael
Jack and Sarah Elizabeth King; and special nieces, nephews and
cousins.
Pallbearers will be Chauncey Sibley, Charlie Sibley II, Timothy
Sibley, Michael Jack, David “Bud” McDaniel, William “Bill” McDaniel,
Harold Hall and Teddy Boyd. Honorary pallbearers will be Willie
Pierce, Mac Spence, John McDaniel and Christopher McDaniel.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Felders General
Fund at 8099 W. Topisaw Rd. S. Summit, MS 39666.
