James W. Fortenberry

1921-2007

James Wesley “Jim” Fortenberry, 85, of Magnolia, died Feb. 21, 2007, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center.

Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Jones Family Funeral Services in McComb and will continue from noon Sunday until services there at 2 p.m. The Rev. Demond Kennedy and the Rev. Troy Bankston will officiate. Burial will full military honors will be in Progress Cemetery.

Mr. Fortenberry was born Dec. 17, 1921, in Progress to Norman C. and Carrie Thornhill Fortenberry.

He was retired from Pike County, where he worked in District 1.

He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Magnolia, where he taught the Ladies Sunday School Class.

He was a retired medic with 25 years service in the U.S. Army at the rank of Command Sergeant Major and served in World War II and Korea.

Mr. Fortenberry was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Philomena “Mina” Ender Fortenberry; three brothers, Ulmer Fortenberry, Luther “Luke” Fortenberry and J.F. Fortenberry; and two sisters, Mary Lou Schilling and Ora F. Dillon.

Survivors include his wife of 14 years, Sarah Frances Dillon Fortenberry of Magnolia; a son, Karl Fortenberry of Progress; two daughters and sons-in-law, Christina and Charlie Ritter of Mooresville, N.C., and Carrie and Greg Jackson of Progress; a stepson and his wife, Robert and Leisa Raynes of McComb; a stepdaughter, Susan Wallace of Hattiesburg; two brothers, Hilton Fortenberry of Progress and Milton Fortenberry and his wife Ruth of McComb; two sisters, Norma Fortinberry of Progress and Louise Cathey of McComb; his mother-in-law, Inez Wood Dillon of Tylertown; four grandchildren, Michael Ritter of Raleigh, N.C., Chad Ritter and wife Abbey of Huntersville, N.C., Trey Wallace of Hattiesburg and Hannah Jackson of Progress; a great-granddaughter, Ella Grace Ritter of Huntersville; his beloved pet, Mon Ami “My Friend” and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Michael Ritter, Chad Ritter, Trey Wallace, Norman Schilling, Wilburn “Bebo” Fortinberry, James Dillon and Keith Dillon.
