Virginia Helen Walker Burrows, 69, of McComb, died April 17,
2008, at the University of Alabama Medical Center in Birmingham,
after a sudden illness. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at
Centenary United Methodist Church, and 1 p.m. Monday until services
there at 3 p.m., with the Rev. Karen Koons officiating. Burial will
follow the service at Hollywood Cemetery in McComb. Jones Family
Funeral Services in McComb is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Burrows was born Dec. 27, 1938, in McComb. She was the daughter
of Joseph Marshall Walker and Virginia Helen Brent Walker. She was a
member of Centenary United Methodist Church for her married life.
Before her marriage, she was a member of McComb First Baptist Church
where she played the piano.
Mrs. Burrows graduated from McComb High School in 1956, earned a
bachelor of arts degree in education from Millsaps in 1960 and a
master of arts degree in education from Florida State University in
1961. She taught in the McComb schools for 28 years and at Southwest
Mississippi Community College for 10 years. Always in pursuit of
education, she returned to school at Mississippi College to earn a
bachelor of science in Art and a master of science and Art with
emphasis in pottery.
With her art background, she pursued many activities in the creative
arts. When the World's Fair came to New Orleans, she represented
Mississippi by demonstrating pottery making. She was a charter
member of the Ceramics Club of McComb and taught many art and
pottery classes for children and adults in Pike County. She also
taught art extension classes for the University of Southern
Mississippi in Natchez and at Southwest Mississippi Community
College.
Her club activities included the Colonial Dames, in which she was a
member and a past president and the professional educational
sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma. She was also active in historical
preservation. She and her sister were able to have Brentwood, their
family home on Delaware Ave. in McComb listed on the National
Register of Historic Places.
Scrapbooking became an interest later in her life and she enjoyed
helping others organize their memories in scrapbooks. She also
enjoyed traveling with her husband and loved spending time with her
grandchildren.
Survivors Include her husband of 46 years, Dr. Robert Clayborn
Burrows of McComb; her daughter, Barbara Helen Willis and son-in-law
Dr. Turner Willis of McComb; her son, David James Burrows of McComb;
four grandchildren, Leslie, Alex and Walker Willis and Julius
Burrows, all of McComb; a sister, Elizabeth Walker Dunnaway and her
husband Phil Ray Dunnaway of Ocean Springs; a brother, Joseph Brent
Walker and his wife Barbara Walker of Memphis, Tenn.; a
brother-in-law, William C. Burrows; nieces and nephews, Brent
Dunnaway, Elizabeth Estis, David Dunnaway, Brad Walker and Mary
Elizabeth Lacova and their families.
Members of the McComb High School class of ‘56 are all honorary
pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Centenary United
Methodist Church Building Fund or the charity of the donor's choice.
