Orrin McRee “Dutch” Battle Jr.

1948-2006

Orrin McRee “Dutch” Battle Jr., 58, a longtime resident of the Hammond/Ponchatoula, La., area, died from injuries sustained in an auto accident Dec. 18, 2006, near his home in Summit.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Hammond, until memorial services there at noon. Jones Family Funeral Services in McComb is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Battle was born July 28, 1948, in Houston, Texas. He was the son of Orrin M. and Laura Groner Battle of Pass Christian.

“Dutch,” a Vietnam Navy veteran, served on the USS Ponchatoula. He was a graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University and was an avid hunter. He was involved in the Columbia Theater Players and the Ponchatoula Kiwanis Club. After a long career in the insurance business, “Dutch” followed his passion for motorcycles and, at the time of his death, worked for Harley Davidson of Hammond. He rode with his friends, the Magnificent Seven who together made the journey to Sturgis, S.D. for Bike Week.

Mr. Battle was preceded in death by his parents; one niece, Allyson Gunnell of Summit; and one nephew, Eric Battle of Alexandria, Va.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Cadwallader Battle; two daughters and sons-in-law, Reagan and Craig Johnson of Hammond and Lindsay and James Lirette of Ponchatoula; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Dr. Pat Battle of Summit and Byron and Margarita Battle of Queretaro, Mexico; two sisters-in-law, Janet and her husband Dr. Bill Gunnell, and Laney Crampton, all of Madison; three brothers-in-law, John Cadwallader of Baton Rouge, the Rev. Douglas Cadwallader of Houston, Texas and Roy Crampton of Jackson; one grandson, Gideon Johnson of Hammond; five nephews, Jeffrey Battle and his wife Julie of Gainesville, Ga., Jason Battle and his wife Laura of Memphis, Tenn., Jesse Battle of Hattiesburg, Lars Battle of Queretaro and Will Gunnell of Summit; and one niece and her husband, Adrienne and Nick Palermo of O’Fallon, Mo.
